According to the relevant railway standard, each rail joint needs to be bolted to approximately 400 foot-pounds of torque on each rail with at least two bolts, which creates 25,000 to 30,000 pounds of tension in the track bolts.
1. The track bolts in use must be of proper size and firmness.
2. The track bolt must be installed with the AREMA spring washer and the nut must be installed against the spring washer.
3. Track bolts must be installed, and nuts must be installed alternately on the inside and outside of the rail.
4. When the track bolt and joint bar are removed, the joint area of the rail and the contact surface of the joint bar must be cleaned, and the joint bar and bolt threads must be lubricated.
5. Safety standards require operation on rails with all track bolts missing or failing
